Vocal Music Boards
Got questions about Vocal Music Boards? We have answers.
What are Vocal Music Boards?
Vocal music boards serve as the final assessments for both the first and second semesters. During these evaluations, students demonstrate their progress by performing a solo piece selected from a predetermined list of songs. Each student is responsible for individually preparing their chosen piece and should consult their teacher with any questions as they arise.
What do Vocal Music Boards Measure?
Vocal Music Boards evaluate skills that are distinct from those assessed in ensemble settings. They specifically measure students’ ability to independently prepare a solo performance and highlight their individual musicianship growth from one semester to the next.
Can I sing a pop, musical theater, or contemporary song?
No. Although we appreciate exploring various genres, the music genre for the Boards is deliberately chosen to introduce students to a genre they may not be as familiar with. This selection aims to challenge and expand their skill set. Students who take private lessons are welcome to choose their song in consultation with their private teacher, but they must submit it to their school teacher for final approval.
Are Vocal Music Boards Required?
Yes, Vocal Music Boards are mandatory for all Vocal Music Majors in grades 6 through 12. Fifth-grade Vocal Music Majors will start participating in Boards during the spring semester of their fifth-grade year.
What if I do not pass my Vocal Music Boards?
- Student is placed on Artistic Probation
- An Artistic Intervention Plan will be implemented, requiring signatures from both the student and parent, and will be documented in the Artistic Director’s Office.
- The student must pass the next two Boards.
- Failure to pass one or both of the next two Boards will result in the student’s removal from the SCPA Vocal Music Program.
